I too was taken aback by the ending, but hoped that Clete and Dave did survive---after all, it was never conclusively stated that they died. And Dave IS telling the story after it all happened. It is mostly written in the first person, so he is narrating the whole story, right up until his brush with death, so that led to me to believe he will be back, as he was alive to write the story!

I wish Mr Burke would go back and write some novels about Clete and Dave that take place "in-between" all the others already published. The list of current Dave Robicheaux novels need not end with this one. He could go back and insert a novel or several of them, between two others, even though they are all sequential.

Yeah, it'd be great to see some more novels, but I don't think it would work trying to insert new, entire novels in between what's already there. Maybe a novella, or short stories, but novels, I don't think, would work.

Plus, JLB is telling us what's going on in this ERA of Dave and Clete's life. So, apparently, anything worth telling during these years, has been told. What would be interesting, nay, GREAT to read, are prequels...novels about the Bobsey Twins from Homicide, during their NOPD days. From the time they got home from 'Nam, onward.

Unfortunately, I doubt any of this will happen. JLB has probably already written everything (to this point) he wants to say.
