Re: DECK of Lucky Strikes ?

Postby Dakotapix on Sun Jun 10, 2007 7:17 am

A deck of Luckies was certainly the cool way to describe a pack of cigarettes and was a frequently used term during a certain period in recent history in writing and radio/TV. No doubt the similarity in shape between a deck of cards and the cigarette pack was the reason.

I'm not sure if it is a typo, but the following sentence reads a bit strange to me. It's from "Johnny Ace", the Esquire version.

-------------

"What's with you two?" Eddy Ray said, one hand on the wheel, a deck of Lucky Strikes wrapped in the sleeve of his T-shirt.

-------------

Ain't that s'posed to be "pack"?

I stand corrected. Not being a smoker is a handicap, I s'pose.

My Dad smoked all his life, but I never heard him or any of his smoking friends use that term when referring to a pack of cigarettes. Of course, he preferred Camels, Chesterfields and Phillip Morris.

Maybe it was mostly a Luckies thing?

Thanks for the update Dakotapix.

Mist

Postby Wendy on Mon Jun 11, 2007 5:18 pm

I haven't posted since Pegasus Descending. I'm in the airport, waiting for a much-delayed flight to New Orleans, where I am being sent by FEMA.

Because my plane is late, I bought the book. It fell open to "Mist." I've heard the end of that story too many times in the last twenty months. And I've seen the memory of those events fading. The houses of the lower Ninth Ward, and the lives of the people who live there, have not been rebuilt. We have no right to forget. Thank you for using the beauty of your language to engrave those terrible images in our minds.

completely off topic

Postby Wendy on Mon Jun 11, 2007 5:29 pm

Oh -- this is completely off-topic, but who else can I tell, and where can I tell it? (And this didn't belong in my last post, anyway.) Last month, I drove from New Orleans to Sulphur via New Iberia, and had lunch at Victor's Cafeteria -- a long-time ambition of mine. And the cashier told the lady in front of me that Mr. Burke was still in town, but hadn't been in recently. And she told me that soap under the sheet is a great remedy for leg cramps, and called me baby. Best experience of the week.

Dear Wendy,

Thank you for your fine letter. I believe "Mist" is one of the best stories I have written. You were a witness to this terrible event in our history, and your words are especially meaningful to me.

All the best,

Jim

Being a music fan & buying 45s at the local dime store to LPs at the local record store as a fan growing up, I jumped at the chance to work at a local record store. Next I opened a record store called Buncha Tapes & Records in Lafayette, LA. Then I went to Houston and was Operations Manager for the 113 store chain Sound Warehouse. Next I became the local RCA sales REP their in Houston, Thus opening the door to meet & sell the Greaser's lps. Next I was sent to MLPS, MN as the National Director of Sales for RCA ( which is now BMG/SONY), calling on Target, Best Buy, Sam Goody, Wal-Mart, KMART, BORDERS, etc.. Next I becames VP of SALES & MARKETING for RCA NASHVILLE, and ended my career back in MLPS as Regional Sales MGR for WINDHAM HILL RECORDS.

I retired in 2000 due to two failed back surgeries. In all I worked with over 700 artists ranging from James Gallaway, John Denver, Police, JUdds, etc.

We know wht all you music people do in your limos, your condos, your luxury ocean liners...and I never got invited... 8)

Mr James Lee Burke I want to write with your articulation and perspicacity! Picked up Jesus Out To Sea yesterday and decided to read the stories in random order. MIST was heartrending, and A SEASON OF REGRET was gripping and VERY enjoyable in an Ambrose Bierce vein. Tonight I'll eeny-meenie-miney moe another couple.

I sure wish I could have taken classes with you, too...
