I had originally really liked the movie Heaven's Prisoners. I believe Phil Jouneau directed the movie, but the best part is I decided to pick up Black Cherry Blues which takes place just after Heavens Prisoners. Well Black Cherry blues blew me away!!
I had even said "This just keeps getting better with each chapter"

I would like to watch Heavens Prisoners again after all these years and hopefully will still like it.

I found a copy of Heaven's Prisoners so I have finally read all but JLB's newest (The Glass Rainbow will be available this summer ... yay!!!). It's so great to finally meet Annie, learn about Dave's first wife and read the entire story surrounding Alafair's arrival in Dave's life.

Rose, isn't Annie the best? And don't you wish you could take the little guy home with you?
I caught a few minutes of the movie on HBO Sunday (my husband discovered it after it started and I hate watching films half-way through so I turned it off until a later time). Although physically I think Alex Baldwin is all wrong for Dave Robicheaux, he is a fine actor and I thought he did a good job. Nowhere near as Robicheauxesque as Tommy Lee Jones, though! And I agree with an earlier posting, I thought Dave's house was a little fancier than I'd imagined.

Oh yesssss ... reading Heaven's Prisoners so long after reading every other Robicheaux story was bittersweet ... I knew too much about Annie and Alafair, but at the same time I didn't know anything at all.

I actually went onto a website ages ago to see what the heck a "shotgun house" looks like ... I'm in cowboy country at 3600' altitude in The Cariboo region of BC ... what the heck does my house or community have in common with Louisianna, bayous or shotgun houses?? Okay ya, there is fish in our lakes, drunks at the bar and lots of people own a horse or two LOL

But neither crime nor passion have boundaries ... looks, feels, sounds the same pretty much anywhere you go ... landscape and local history figures huge in the way a person grows up and I love how JLB weaves all that (and more) into a fantastic story.

I finally got to see Heaven's Prisoners. I'd heard not so flattering things about it, one of which was that it was painfully obvious at what point the film ran out of money.

Let me say this, first: I am not a fan of Alec Baldwin. I think he's just below marginal, as an actor, at best. He's in no way my idea of Dave.

While every Robicheaux novel is excellent, in comparison to the others, this one was not on my list of favorites. Nothing wrong with the book, it just didn't click for me. And with the other books that, to me, are more interesting, I couldn't understand why they chose this one to make into a movie.

And why make a movie without Clete? ~grin

I'm also a filmophile. I love movies. I am a student of film, have taken film classes (production, not just study) and have a pretty high standard when it comes to film quality.

Now, having said that...I really liked the movie Heaven's Prisoners. I was pleasantly surprised, it was much better than I had convinced myself it would be. Alec didn't ruin it (though he STILL isn't my idea of Dave), the production quality seemed fine, and I found myself into what was happening in the movie. The performances were good, save for Teri Hatcher, whom I considered to be about the only weak link. Eric Roberts rocqued as Bubba (see what I did there? lol), Batiste was excellent, and DDG was exactly the actor I had always envisioned him to be.

What I didn't like, was regardless of what Dave was doing, fishing in the muddy swamps, working in the bait shop, or chasing down bad guys in the seedy parts of NO, he was always wearing dress pants. Not a great costuming choice, but oh well.

Overall, I recommend HP. I will probably buy the DVD, and add it to my collection.

Great pants, that is exactly what I mean when I say that Baldwin was to pretty to play Dave, just can't imagine him with his hair mussed up or falling down drunk.
