what about Tom Selleck?

Mr. Burkes description of Clete in Swan Peak doesn't sound like John Goodman anymore.

******POSSIBLE SPOIL ON CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Postby Brad Branch on Wed Jul 16, 2008 8:12 am

hey bart;

You got the brooding part right about dave, I guess about the best I've seen at brooding with the intensity I perceive dave to have is also a tombstone cast member, Kurt Russel.

Morning pat; I have to agree that clete seems to be going through some changes as well, I guess its his perceived loss of the "Big Sleazy" as he knew it, which is more than likely manifesting itself in a "sea change" as to how clete interacts with the rest of the world, plus in this story, clete comes just about as close to shaking hands with the guy wearing the cowl and carrying the scythe than he has ever been in the last 20 or 30 years. He has always had a somewhat cavalier attitude as to his own mortality and I think he is developing a sense that he can no longer utilize the attitudes and idioms of the young to mentally disregard it.

I guess as we all grow older we hit points where we realize that if we're going to have a little peace in this life, we have to stop "spitting in the tiger's mouth" so much :wink:

Her name is Diane Delano, she was the female alaskan state trooper on northern exposure some years back.

Brad, you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! In fact, I was sitting here reading this forumn, thinking "What was the name of the actress who played "Helen" (ahem!), Maurice Minniefield's (the astronaut) girlfriend on Northern Exposure?" when I saw your post!
Kathy Bates as is just too knee-jerk easy for me, as is John Goodman as Clete. Personally, I'd have loved to see him played by Robbie Coltrane.

Robbie would make a good clete I reckon, he can certainly get the right facial expressions for giving the impression of having highly repressed rage just below the surface, ready to blast off at the drop of a hat.

Think you'll find lots of interesting stuff here in the threads, hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us.

Dave has never been a problem for me. My minds eye always sees Lance Henriksen who played Frank Black on "Millennium both physical features and voice.

THANKS, Larrie! I've been trying to remeber that guys name since I joined this forum. Everyone tried to help but I never could come up with a show to go with the face. He played on X-files afew times and now thanks to you, Millennium. After i could never figure out his name, I chose Tommy Lee Jones. Thanks, Lonnie

Fred Ward as Dave.Either Nick Nolte or Brian Dennehy as Clete.I also like the idea of Kevin Spacey as the rich (snobbish) guy in JLB's books.Kathy Bates as Helen.Still undecided on Alafair and Daves latest wife.

Some interesting choices here. I agree Brendan Gleason could probably pull it off. I loved him as the sheriff in Lake Placid.

Can't really break it down by decade...I choose to cast as they are now.

My choices:

Dave- TLJ, or Fred Ward.

Clete- Vincent D'onofrio

Helen- Denise Crosby ( a lot of people have said Kathy Bates. I don't see that at all. Dave describes her more than once as having a strange, androgenous beauty, and in some cases a noticeable sexuality. Kathy doesn't have those) Here's a pic;

Legion Guidry- Nick Nolte

Troyce Nix- David Morse

Captain Thigpen- Billy Bob Thornton

Batiste- Delroy Lindo

Kermit Abelard- Jude Law

Monarch Little- Johnny Ray Gill

this is what I have so far.

My mental image of Clete has always been a more weighty version of Michael Richards (Seinfeld's Kramer.) Even without any extra padding, his mannerisms, language, and attire seem to be a perfect match to descriptions in the books. And yes, I think Tommy Lee Jones is perfect casting as Dave.
