Why pick Electric Mist for the next movie?

Postby Fantum on Fri Dec 28, 2007 12:23 pm

Hi folks; first-time poster, long-time JLB/DR reader, and long-time lover of New Orleans.

Was just curious; if you had asked me which DR book would be last in line for conversion into a movie, I probably would have picked "Electric Mist".....just because of the fantasy (can't think of a better word) element......Dave "seeing dead people". Anyone know why this particular book was chosen?

That being said, Tommy Lee Jones will probably get Dave about 95% right (needs to grow quite a few inches, but I'll not call him on that one). Baldwin wasn't bad, but is too "pretty" for the Dave who inhabits my mind's eye.

Just out of curiosity, I Google-Earthed New Iberia. I didn't go back and check in any of the books to try to triangulate the spot where Dave's old house and boat rental business were in the early books, but anyone here have an idea? Spanish Lake was easy, as was the Cemetery.

Thanks.

Fantum, Dutch and I had a plan for the last book signing in New Iberia to pick an ideal spot for the Bait Shop (remember Dutch?). Just for fun you could enter these coordinates on google earth....Lat. N 29' 58.476 and W 91' 44.636 or just pan down East Old Spanish Trail south of New Iberia between N.I. and Jeanerette.

I used to clear power lines for the power co. all along the Spanish Trail. Back then there was lots of neat places for Bait Shops and if my memory serves me any good, I think there was a few in this area. Its close (just to the south) to the Teche Motel that Stacey from OK City and her daughter Ryanne stayed at, me thinks.

......I'll plug the coordinates in and see what happens. I'm not sure I could find the Old Spanish Trail on Google Earth unless it's a main artery heading north/south. Never been there, so don't know where to look.

I just didn't see many swamps or swamplike areas on Google Earth. Thanks for taking the time to point me in the right direction.

I've not latitude/longitude savvy, and couldn't get those coordinates to work on Google Earth. Is there a different format you could give them to me in? Looks like I'm a couple of digits short, perhaps.

Thanks again.

Negative on the couple digits short Fantum. It took a few years of playing with a GPS for my brain to register the science and science is me favorite subject. If you have a map software program like Microsoft Streets & Maps or DeLorme maps, it would help. Even a regular old Highway map.

Here's a yahoo map....

The Spanish Trail is called E. Main St. in the city limits. Its also called Hwy. 182 and it runs south with Bayou Teche all the way to Morgan City.

Stay with the JLB board. It gets fun sometimes and there are lots of good folks with info. to share. Lonnie

p.s. Jim could tell us where his creative visual of the Bait Shop should be located. I don't think it got washed away with Katrina or Rita. Lets hope Batiste is still alive too. :)

Lets see if this works....hope it gives you a visual with just about any spot for a bait shop. Hope someday you can visit the area Fantum. Its a real neat place and a very scenic drive to the south. later, lb

I'll work on my "science", and in the meantime, I think I can spot Main/Spanish Trail on Google Earth.

Maybe I'll add another day to the next Nawlins trip and see New Iberia and points south.

{In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead} is quite a good novel. I recall reading a while back that TLJ had bought the film rights to it and was overjoyed to see it finally in production.

{Heaven's Prisoners} was a decent movie, but it had some key differences from the book. As a mystery/thriller movie, it was passable, but any reader of the book would be pretty disappointed. Still, it did put the book series out there and stir up ideas.

I would like to see an adaptation of {Jolie Blon's Bounce} next, if they were to go for another.
