LATEST NEWS UPDATES Jim was recently awarded a Pushcart prize for the story WHY BUGSY SIEGEL WAS A FRIEND OF MINE. The Pushcart Anthology is comprised of the best poetry, stories and essays published during the previous year by literary magazines and independent presses.
Also, there is another motion picture contract in place with the talented BERTRAND TAVERNIER directing IN THE ELECTRIC MIST WITH CONFEDERATE DEAD. We have no further "official" casting information. (I'm sure we all have our favorite picks for Dave and Cletus). If you've read this book, you can imagine how well this book and its images will translate to film. I'll keep you posted.

THE MOLESTER, a short story by James Lee Burke Download this short story, available now through Amazon.com for only .49 cents.
JLB speaks about THE MOLESTER:
I wrote this short story after the death of my best and oldest friend. The story is based on our experience growing up during the depression era and the war years. It is intended to show a vision of America that is dramatically different, in my opinion, from the one that in some ways defines us today. |

"It deals with a new phase in the life of Dave Robicheaux, one in which he becomes involved with a remarkable Catholic nun and a family who claim descent from the Roman knights who defeated Attila the Hun at the Battle of Chalons. Unfortunately for Dave, this particular family considers Dave the modern equivalent of Attila. Dave also finds himself the target of a smear campaign waged by a local television personality who may or may not be the Baton Rouge serial killer."

According to JLB:
"LAST CAR TO ELYSIAN FIELDS deals with a new phase in Dave Robicheaux's life, but more importantly it deals with
what is perhaps a new era in our country's history. My statement may be a bit grandiose. The reader will have to decide. I think it's fair to say, however, that this book is among the strongest in the series." |

WHITE DOVES AT MORNING November 2002 FROM THE PUBLISHER
Drawing on his personal family history, James Lee Burke crafts a story of enormous scope about three best friends from Louisiana who -- despite their own misgivings about the "Cause" -- enlist in the Confederate Army and set off to war. Willie Burke, the character based on Burke's own great, great uncle, befriends an attractive and uncommonly bright young slave and teaches her how to read in violation of local laws. White Doves at Morning is a rich love story set in a time of upheaval that affected all men and women, from slave to enlisted man to plantation owner. Burke is at his finest-this is a genuine masterpiece combining enthralling storytelling; controlled, lyrical prose, and astutely drawn characters.
Burke has written a historical novel -- an epic story of love, hate, and survival set against the tumultuous background of the Civil War and Reconstruction. |
